Vote for an unsung hero

This year’s search for young people Eastwood and Kimberley who act as positive role models is coming to an end.

The Bakkavor Desserts Young People of the Year (YOPEY) is looking to recognise and reward young unsung heroes who give to others with £2,000 in prize money for the winners to share with good causes.

After a two-year break due to the recession, the awards have returned to Nottinghamshire thanks to the support of the Newark chilled desserts manufacturer on Jessop Way.

Giving to others can take many forms from caring for family members, through fundraising for charity and helping to run youth organisations, to volunteering for projects at home or abroad.

YOPEY also welcomes entries for young people who have been in trouble in the past but are turning their lives around.

The scheme was started in 2005 by a former national newspaper journalist Tony Gearing, to combat the bad press young people receive.

Tony said: “The image of young people today is unfair - it is as if everyone is a ‘binge-drinking, drug-taking, violent hoodie’.

“And yet the truth is the majority are good and some are fantastic.

“The Bakkavor Desserts YOPEY is promoting the fantastic young unsung heroes in Nottinghamshire and setting them up as positive role models for the younger generation to copy.”

Tony is calling youth organisations leaders and parents to nominate their young people aged 10-25 before applications close on August 31.

Bakkavor Desserts Business Director Paul Peachey said he was pleased to be sponsoring this fantastic competition which rewards hard working, community-spirited young people.”

There is a top prize of £800 to be won by a young person or group of young people which will see £400 directly awarded to them and the other £400 invested in a community project, youth

organisation or charity of their choice.

Second-place will win £400, third £200 and the Junior YOPEY aged under 16 will win £200.

An awards ceremony will be held under the Dome at Kelham Hall, near Newark, in October.
