Walking football

Older people who think their footballing days are behind them don’t have to hang up their boots just yet, thanks to two new walking football sessions kicking off in Chilwell and Kimberley next month.

What’s more, the first session is completely free.

This new version of the beautiful game uses the same rules as five-a-side football, except participants are not

allowed to run, only walk.

Following the success of previous sessions in Bramcote, two new sessions will take place at Kimberley

Leisure Centre, every Tuesday between 2pm and 3pm, starting May 7, and at Chilwell Olympia Sports Centre every Saturday between 10am and 11am, starting May 11, with participants again able to enjoy their first session for free.

Staying active is important at any age, but especially so for older adults as regular exercise can help to prevent some medical conditions and help to reduce the risk of suffering a stroke.

The sessions are a great way for older people to keep fit, whether they are still active or returning to exercise, whilst socialising with other local people.

After the first free session, each session costs just £2 and booking is recommended. Participants are advised to wear ‘astro trainers’ or trainers and shin pads.

The walking football sessions are provided by Broxtowe Borough Council’s sports development team, Broxtowe Sport, who work with a variety of different partners including residents, sports people, coaches, volunteers and clubs to improve the quality and range of sports provision in Broxtowe Borough.
