Kimberley suffer cup semi-final heartbreak

Kimberley’s hopes of reaching the Derbyshire Cup Final were ended as they were beaten at Sandiacre Town on Sunday.

Batting first, Kimberley quickly crashed to 8-4 with Dan Birch, Akhil Patel, Jon Terry and Sam Ogrizovic all back in the pavilion with barely a run between them.

Dan Wheeldon (4-41) picked up three wickets with John Jordison (3-21) claiming the other.

Paldip Sidhu (11) and Paul Riley (27) added 34 for the fifth wicket before Jordison trapped Sidhu lbw. Riley was next man out to James Chapman (1-38)and when James Mann followed Kimberley were staring down the barrel at 67-7 in the 18th over.

But thanks to Dominic Wheatley (50) and Matt Wright (27) adding 65 for the eighth wicket they avoided humiliation - Kimberley eventually all out for 167 in the 45th over.

Sandiacre’s reply was cruising along at nearly five-an-over as Charlie Ault (41) and Chapman (60) built a 94-run opening stand; that is until three wickets in five overs thanks to Chris Glover (2-22) and a run out piqued Kimberley’s interest as they saw a way back into the game.

With the middle-order opened up Kimberley toiled away, Patel eventually seeing off Ben Rurhmund, but there were to be no more wickets as Matt Goldstone (32*) and Dave Jordison (19*) compiled a 48-run stand to see the home side to victory.
