Six wickets down at lunch, Durham lost James Weighell to Harry Gurney, early in the session, for 22, as the left arm pace man collected his second wicket of the day.

Having been on the field for 48 hours with a foot injury it was then a surprise to see Brydon Carse hobble his way to the middle, accompanied by Keaton Jennings as his runner.

Given a free licence to go after his shots, the 20-year old hit a huge six off Samit Patel and eight fours in his career best knock of 47.

Brett Hutton eventually got rid of Carse, and followed it up by removing Chris Rushworth, both to catches by wicketkeeper Riki Wessels.

Borthwick had made sure the follow on had been saved and also ensured maximum batting points were gathered, as he reached his 150 from 225 balls.

He launched Hutton for a maximum and was closing in on his double hundred, when Graham Onions was bowled by Gurney, with the visitors’ just 87 runs behind.
