Crisis-hit Eastwood produce stunning win

Worksop Town 2 Eastwood Town 3

A severely depleted Eastwood Town defied all the odds to produce a remarkable comeback and claim all three points at Worksop Town on Wednesday night .

With four squad members refusing to play due to a wage dispute and two more key players out injured, the Badgers fielded a young and inexperienced side with three 17-year-olds starting and several other teenagers in the squad.

But having fallen two behind within 23 minutes they then led by half-time and held on to take the most unlikely three points.

The hosts looked nailed on winners from the off, though TJ Nightingale nearly registered 90 seconds in when fed through on goal but fired wide.

Worksop then took control and led after ten minutes as Matt Young’s looping shot from 20 yards beat Sam Andrew in goal.

Kern Miller and Leon Mettam both nearly made it two and Danny Elliott was just wide at the other end, before Mettam did register on 23 minutes with a header six yards out following good work by Craig King and Tom Denton.

What followed stunned everyone, as an 11-minute purple patch ultimately proved crucial.

Romaine Graham bundled home a corner at the far post to make it 2-1 on 34 minutes, and within 60 seconds it was 2-2 as Gregg Simmons’ great work down the right was finished by Nightingale six yards out.

Steve Towers then curled just wide for Worksop before Simmons cut inside and saw a shot deflected onto the bar, but the young winger wasn’t to be denied on the stroke of half-time.

When the ball fell to him in the penalty area he still had work to do but after beating a defender he turned to fire an excellent finish into the top corner and suddenly the Badgers led.

And that was how it stayed. Worksop had huge possession in the second-half but with little end product, shots straight at Andrew from King, Miller and Lee Beeson about as close as they got, although Ryan Clarke saw a late header cleared off the line.

Only Elliott’s shot that was pushed away by Paul Bastock three minutes from time threatened to make the game safe, but Eastwood had done enough and their second league win in a row was secured.
