CUP PERFECT FOR SELSTON
Selston boss Karl Steed believes next month's Staton Mortgages & Protection Specialists Invitational Cup at Sherwood Colliery will be the perfect way to integrate a handful of new signings into his squad for next season.
Selston are back in training and have a month of friendlies scheduled to prepare for the friendly competition which at least adds a bit of spice to the end of a season curtailed by Covid.
“It is something for us to look forward to and it's brilliant of Sherwood to put it on and host it,” said Steed.
“It's a good venue and there are three other good sides in it. They will all be very competitive games and it's a good chance to integrate the new players.
“I have four or five lads that have come in and did one session pre-Covid and I am hoping they can make a big difference to us.”
He added that more new faces were anticipated, saying: “We are looking at different markets and we're looking at lads who are going to university in Nottingham to try to branch out a little bit further.
“I am also hoping to get a couple of lads from outside the area into the dug-out to assist me and I am hoping they can bring three or four fresh faces as well. It will give us competition for places and strength in depth.”
Steed will be without some players who want to spend time with their families now the restrictions have been eased.
“I will try to give the new lads as much football as I can,” he said.
“There are a couple of the established lads who want a bit more time off based on it being non-competitive.
“Now restrictions are easing they can spend more time with their families and get out to places as they open up. It is understandable and I am not a strict headmaster.”
He continued: “I have told the lads I just them to get back into the swing of it and I won't kill them. They have been out that long I just want them to enjoy being back. With restrictions easing a bit as well we can hopefully spend a bit of time together off the pitch as well to get a bit of normality and keep morale up.”
A mix of trialists, U19s and four first teamers turned out for Selton in a 3-1 defeat by AFC Kilburn last weekend.
