Eastwood Town 1 AFC Fylde 4

AFC Fylde had little trouble in continuing their push for a play-off spot as they eased past Eastwood Town at Coronation Park on Tuesday night.

In front of just 98 people, Eastwood’s lowest league attendance for some time, two goals in a minute during the first-half effectively killed the game off there and then, with the Badgers’ young squad unable to cope with Fylde’s impressive line-up.

The visitors made most of the early running, Jimmy McCarthy with an early overhead kick that dropped over the bar and Sean Cooke’s cross dipping just too high.

Paolo Piliero produced Eastwood’s first notable effort with a decent strike at keeper Ben Hinchliffe on 16 minutes, but five minutes later Fylde would register twice within 90 seconds to take what would be an unassailable lead.

Cooke was the scorer both times. First, the winger who signed from Nantwich Town only last week got on the end of a low ball into the area from McCarthy to drill low past Richard Stainsby on 22 minutes.

And the Badgers had barely had time to regroup when a long ball saw Cooke running into acres of space behind the defence and he calmly slotted past Stainsby to make it two.

Eastwood were lacking both ideas and the quality to execute them, long range shots the order of the day with Mitch Hanson and Sam Craven both trying their luck unsuccessfully.

Hanson also failed to capitalise when Hinchliffe dropped a cross on 28 minutes but couldn’t get good enough contact and the ball was cleared off the line.

The early second-half running came from Fylde and both Joe Booth and Cooke hit the post before the third goal arrived on 61, James Dean turning in Booth’s cross from ten yards out.

The Badgers did then give themselves something to cheer with a goal back.

Piliero’s free-kick from out on the right touchline was swung in well and Vijay Selvam arrived to get the final touch for his first Badgers goal on 65 minutes.

But after further chances for Cooke, who shot wide after a good turn, and Eastwood’s Gregg Smith who nodded a tough chance wide on 77 minutes, Fylde made it 4-1 with nine to go when a good break forward ended with sub Aaron Fleming squaring to Dean who stabbed in, via the body of Stainsby, from just a few yards out.

Fleming nearly made it five before the end but Stainsby gathered his shot, and the referee soon brought an end to the home side’s misery.
