Eastwood Town 0 Frickley Athletic 1
James Burgess’s late goal denied Eastwood what would have been a deserved point as Frickley sealed only their second away win of the season on Tuesday night.
Substitute Burgess struck seven minutes from time to secure the points and add further to Eastwood’s misery, though as on Saturday there were positives to be taken from this encounter.
Eastwood were the first to threaten, Scott Rogers driving a 30-yard volley just wide of the right hand post in the 11th minute.
Two minutes later, Jason Yates found space on the right for Frickley and his cross was headed down to Jake Picton whose first-time effort flew just over the bar.
There was a determination in the home side and Sam Winch turned inside the penalty area but fired straight at Jamie Green from 12 yards after 18 minutes, and Kallum Keane wasn’t fire away a minute later with an effort that went wide.
Frickley almost broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, a cross-cum-shot from the right by Jimmy Ghaichem being dropped by goalkeeper Richard Stainsby, and James Wootton’s effort from the rebound was blocked on the line.
Bradley Munn headed just over after a corner kick at the other end in the 27th minute, and a free-kick by Ghaichem in the 42nd minute was only half cleared and Picton, following up, headed inches too high, while Yates whipped in a cross from the right two minutes later and Picton produced a fine 12 yard header which went agonisingly wide.
The Badgers’ persistence continued in the second-half, Jake Green joining the attack to unleash a strong angled shot in the 56th minute which namesake Jamie Green managed to punch to safety.
Preston Robinson then fired high and wide for the Badgers on 64 as Eastwood continued to probe.
With both teams pushing to break the deadlock, Bradley Munn got clear in the 72nd minute only to lift his angled shot over the target, while Wootton went close with a header for Frickley after a left wing cross seven minutes later.
Winch broke away for Eastwood in the 82nd minute and fired wide when he should have done better, but Burgess made no mistake for Frickley a minute later, controlling the ball and beating Stainsby from 12 yards to give his side the spoils in a game where it always looked like one goal would be enough.
