Weston positive as Selston prepare for Hucknall battle

Selston manager Craig Weston says his side have nothing to fear as they prepare to host in-form Hucknall Town on Saturday.

Andy Graves’ men have won all seven of their league games so far and sit second in the table, four points behind Selston and with three games in hand.

But despite that impressive start and the fact the Yellows have only conceded one goal in the league, Weston believes his team has what it takes to upset them.

He said: “It’s a big game for both sides as we’ve both started well and want to maintain that.

“They’ve obviously won all their games so far but we’ve won eight of our ten and feel capable of beating anyone. We’re top of the table and want to stay there.

“These are the kinds of games you look forward to more as they test you and the players have been talking about this match for the last couple of weeks.

“Not only that, but we always tend to play well against the top sides, so regardless of how well Hucknall have started and how few goals they’ve conceded, I always fancy us to get goals and we’ll be confident of winning even though their confidence will be sky high.”

The Central Midlands League South has proved a competitive division so far this season with just nine points separating the top six sides.

Holbrook St Michaels prop up the table having yet been able to manage a point, and will be Selston’s next opponents after the Hucknall game.

Weston says the quality of the division has been a positive aspect of the campaign so far.

He said: “It’s better than last year as although there are three fewer teams, it seems to be more competitive with more potential challengers for the promotion spots.

“No games are easy. We only managed to beat Southwell narrowly last weekend and I was keen for the players not to be distracted too much by the Hucknall game to the point where we dropped points against Southwell.

“I think we’ve got a better squad than last season too, although the bulk of it is the same.

“The league is a bit strange in some ways as I’m not sure how Matlock Town Reserves are down towards the bottom given how well they played against us, but that shows the unpredictability of it.”

Overall, Weston says he’s been satisfied by the start Selston have made as they aim to defend their league title.

He added: “The aim was to get to the top of the table as soon as possible and try to pull away a bit.

“We’ve done that, but are still catchable given Hucknall’s games in hand, so one key job is to pull ourselves clear of them too which is where Saturday’s game will be important as it’s crucial to take points off of those around you.

“The players don’t need any motivating for Saturday. We are strong going forward and will get goals so if we do what we do best then I’m confident we can win.”
