Kimberley MW remain top of the NSL after they edged past Awsworth Villa 2-1 in a game played at Hucknall’s Watnall Road on Friday night.
The game was played at a tremendous pace and in great spirit and was a fine advert for the NSL.
Awsworth started the game much better and were in front after only two minutes with a goal from Richard Hodgman. Two minutes later a header for Awsworth was only just wide with our keeper beaten.
Josh Stevenson then headed just too high for Kimberley before Liam Baker’s great saving tackle denied Villa a second.
After 15 minutes Kimberley levelled when Tobias Richardson headed home Jake Fisher’s cross to make it 1-1.
Martin Lench made a run on goal but shot over the crossbar and then Fisher was released in on goal only for the goalkeeper to save, as he did moments later from the same player and then Red Wilmott.
The second-half began with more efforts from Stevenson being saved, Lench firing over and Fisher’s shot saved for a corner.
But the second goal came on 67 minutes when Stevenson won the ball down the wing and crossed for Lench who side-footed home to make it 2-1.
Sub Ishmael Bartley nearly made it three, as did Fisher whose shot was well saved, but despite having John Hughes sent off for two yellow cards and Danny Chaplin and Ian Shephered also missing a late openings, Welfare held on to win.
This Saturday (February 1) Kimberley are at home to Magdala at the Stag Ground, kick-off 2.30pm.
