Karate kid Megan Swann celebrates after winning the bronze medal in the world under 14s Go-kan-ryu championship.

Aldercar Community and Language College student Megan, who is just 13, already held a national gold medal for her martial arts discipline before going in for her first ever international event, at the National Indoor Arena, in Birmingham, last week. She beat four competitors to take third place in the tournament which featured contestants from as far away as Australia and the Americas. Proud dad and trainer, Mark Swann, 34, from Kirby Road, Newthorpe, said: “I’m so chuffed, she was nervous but she white-washed her first round opponent.”
