INTERVIEW: Steve Backshall talks about his upcoming tour Wild World

BAFTA winning TV presenter Steve Backshall will be embarking on a mind blowing nationwide tour Wild World later this year.

Steve is one of the nation’s favourite wildlife adventurers and his show, which promises to be filled with stories, exclusive behind the scenes content and much more from his gruelling and record breaking expeditions, is at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall on October 27.

Tales from his nail-biting adventures to the world’s wildest places with the most bizarre and deadly beasts on earth will leave audiences of all ages on the edge of their seats. From the depths of the rainforest to the bottom of the sea, there is very little Steve Backshall hasn’t seen which will keep audiences’ eyes and ears glued from start to finish.

What can people coming to the show expect?

The show will be a chance for people to hear behind the scenes stories, see bloopers, hear about highlights and challenges and they’ll also get the chance to ask me some questions.

What do you most enjoy about going on tour?

My favourite part of doing the shows is that it gives me chance to see what people think of my projects, when I’m filming and it’s just me and a cameraman I have no idea how people will feel about what it is we’re working on. It’s also great to hear what people enjoy watching and what they’d like to see more of.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

I have a soft spot for the Himalayas. There’s nowhere else on earth quite like it.

What’s been the scariest moment when filming?

We were once diving in the Okavango river when we came face to face with hippos. I still wonder how we all came away unhurt.

You have described your job as the best in the world, why do you say that?

Fore someone like me, with my personality, my passion and my erratic mind, it’s the perfect job. There’s always new places to go and new things to see and I’m always learning. It keeps me on my toes and I’m very lucky to do what I do and of course I enjoy sharing my experiences with others.

Which animal are you most scared of?

Hippos. They are just such huge animals and as I explained earlier, they can be very scary.

Working with such scary animals, how do you ensure you stay safe?

I always risk assess. And we always make sure that at any stage we or the animals we are working with are not in any danger.

After the tour, what comes next?

I am getting married later this year and my fiancée (rower Helen Glover) is competing in the Rio Olympics so hopefully we’ll find some time for a honeymoon.
