The Derbyshire Singers is continuing to bring a variety of works and performances to its local audiences, in this its 40th anniversary year.
This next concert by Bath Camerata Choir is a rare opportunity to hear an outstanding, internationally known chamber choir, and it takes place at St Mary’s Church in Cromford, from 7.30pm on Saturday, May 31.
In 1986, Nigel Perrin, of the King Singers fame, gathered together a group of singers from the Bath area to see what could be achieved with West country talent.
27 years on, Bath Camerata continues to thrive, singing a wide variety of music in concerts throughout Europe. The variety of work performed is one of the identifying features of the choir.
It has won prizes in France, Italy and Ireland and in 2002, won the Sainsbury’s BBC TV Adult Choir of the Year at the Royal Albert Hall, in London.
The following year, the Bath Camerata was invited to perform with the Three Tenors, Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras in the Royal Crescent, Bath, while in the summer of 2007 the choir sang in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig where Bach was Cantor from 1723 – 1750, and the recently reconstructed Frauenkirche in Dresden with its amazing acoustic. Also in 2007 it was privileged to share a concert with Paco Pena, in a performance of his Missa Flamenco that received a five-star review from The Times newspaper.
The choir has made two specialist CDs: To Music, a recording of German Romantic part-songs, which was chosen as Gramophone magazine’s Critic’s Choice in 1999, and Light Fantastic, a collection of entertaining a cappella tracks.
The programme is called from Bach to Broadway and more details are at www.derbyshiresingers.org
