Return of the Halle

Sir Mark Elder
Sir Mark Elder

SIR Mark Elder will be conducting The Halle on Friday, January 20, when they make their latest appearance at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham, from 7.30pm.

This atmospheric concert sees Argentinean pianist Nelson Goerner join the orchestra to play Ravel’s richly-hued concerto of 1931.

Written in 1931 for the Viennese virtuoso Paul Wittgenstein, who lost an arm in the First World War, its jazz-tinged rhythms are etched against a dark-hued orchestral background.

The concerto is framed by two contrasting soundscapes. En Saga is dark and brooding tone poem from early in Sibelius’s career, while Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, ‘the Pastoral’, is as much an emotional landscape as a scenic description.

Tickets cost £10 to £32 and are available by calling the box office on 0115 9895555.
