Of course, we couldn’t create a list featuring everyone who is famous for living under the shadow of the railway viaduct – but here are some people you know, and some you may be surprised to know, who have lived or worked in our great town.
5. Sir Richard Leese
Richard was born and brought in Mansfield and attended Brunts School then left to go to Warwick University. He is now an English politician in Manchester, and has been the leader of Manchester City Council since 1996 and a member of the Labour Party since 1984. Photo: MA
6. Greg Owen
Born in Mansfield in 1972 Greg became a professional golfer in 1992 and gained his European Tour card in 1997. Since 2005, Owen has played mainly in the United States being a full member of the PGA Tour in 2005–07, 2009–10 and 2012. Photo: Johnston Press
7. Alvin Stardust
Born Bernard Jewry in 1942 he was known professionally as Shane Fenton and later as Alvin Stardust, was an English rock singer and stage actor who lived in Mansfield as a child. He had a moderately successful career in the pre-Beatles era, but became better known for singles released in the 1970s and 1980s as Alvin Stardust, a character he began in the glam rock era. 8. Joel Peat
