His letter said: “We are truly seeing all parts of society come together to support each other during this difficult period. Unfortunately, I have heard numerous reports of key workers in my constituency being victims of crime, several having their cars vandalised.
“We know across the UK, NHS staff are being targeted by muggers trying to steal their identity badges to obtain the free food and drinks offered to doctors and nurses tackling coronavirus.
“This behaviour is abhorrent, and I condemn any person who commits such a crime against NHS staff.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions made it clear that anyone using coronavirus to threaten emergency and essential workers would face criminal charges.
“I very much welcome this and ask that the Government will ensure that those who commit any crimes against our hardworking front-line NHS staff receive the harshest possible penalty.
“Nottinghamshire Police have worked hard to protect essential services and key workers. A new Covid 19 task force made up of 80 police officers is patrolling up to 37 miles on foot every two days across Nottinghamshire to ensure the public keep two metres apart and are only out for essentials and exercise once a day.
“The force is working extremely hard, I hope every effort is made by the Government to support them.”
