New Notts police officer and dog awarded licence to chase down criminals

Police Constable Nick Dachtler joined Nottinghamshire Police’s dog section at the end of 2019, having spent nine years as a Special Constable in Grantham, Lincolnshire and almost 20 years full-time with Derbyshire Constabulary where he became a dog handler.

PC Dachtler, along with his dog Police Dog Brody were presented with their licence from Chief Constable Craig Guildford after being independently assessed by a South Yorkshire Police Dog instructor on July 9.

As part of the licensing, the pair completed a number of exercises which test the skills needed on the job, including chasing, detaining and alerting officers to criminals.

PD Dachtler said: “It’s fantastic to have received the licence and I very much look forward to this partnership with PD Brody.

“Nottinghamshire was the force I originally planned on joining, but they weren’t recruiting at the time. I’ve been on a number of visits and since finally joining at the back end of last year it’s been fantastic to be part of a team and organisation that I’ve admired for some time.

“I spent 14 years with the Dog Section in Derbyshire so it is most certainly the area of policing that I love.

“In that time I got to work with a variety of dogs trained to do different jobs, so I’m definitely looking forward to not only using this experience in my role here at Nottinghamshire Police, but also passing this on to the newer and younger recruits as they join.”

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: “It was a very impressive performance the pair put in at their licencing and I was very pleased to present PC Dachtler with his licence.

“It’s great to see recruitment into our Dog Section, who are a valuable resource when it comes to supporting for a number areas of police work.

“I’m also very happy to hear that Nottinghamshire was a first choice for PC Dachtler and we very much hope he enjoys his time with us.”
