The ring (pictured) was among a number of pieces stolen from the house in Wheatley Avenue, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, between 1pm and 6.20pm on Monday, December 5.

The ring is a unique and unusual piece due to a black rhodium-plated white gold band and has a “rose cut” diamond which is at least one carat. It has two rows of “brilliant cut” diamonds half way around the ring. A solid thick band round the back. The ring dates 1945-1947, but it is believed the large centre diamond is older than the ring and may have been taken from a much older piece of jewellery.

Nottinghamshire Police has a number of tips to try to help prevent residents from suffering the heart-break of becoming a burglary victim.

As the nights get darker earlier, leave a light on inside your home. Remember to choose low energy lamps.

Use a timer switch to operate the lights as it starts to get dark. Change the times that the lights come on to simulate an occupied home.

Make sure your front door is well lit. Use dusk to dawn lighting that automatically comes on as it gets dark. Make sure you keep your doors and windows locked at all times.

Ensure your keys are kept in a safe place out of sight and well away from your letterbox.
