Kind firm gives Kirkby pensioner new mobility scooter after last one was stolen and destroyed

A 98-year-old woman whose mobility scooter was stolen and destroyed has been presented with a replacement after a company saw a police witness appeal.

The scooter was taken from Norma King's front garden in Oak Street, Kirkby, between 12.30pm and 4.35pm on Sunday, July 15.

Her handbag, which contained a quantity of cash and was inside the scooter, was also taken.

The scooter was later found smashed up at a park.

Police are investigating the theft and appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to get in touch.

Today, Mrs King was presented with a replacement scooter free-of-charge by the company Parkgate Mobility which wanted to help her after seeing Nottinghamshire Police's appeal, which was publicised in the Mansfield Chad.

Mrs King said: "I'm so grateful to Parkgate Mobility for giving me this scooter.

"It's so kind and thoughtful of them and I can't wait to try it out.

"I've had so much support from people since my scooter and handbag were stolen and I'd like to thank them all.

"Having my scooter stolen has really affected me and I'd urge anyone with any information to call the police to help catch those responsible."

Parkgate Mobility Business Manager Tracy Simmons said: "It's disgusting that these thieves targeted an elderly and vulnerable woman and stole her scooter which was her lifeline, giving her independence and freedom.

"We wanted to help her after hearing what happened and we've now given her a good-quality second-hand scooter to replace her stolen one.

"We've tried to find a match for her old scooter but if it's not suitable for Mrs King we will swap it for one that is."

Sergeant Simon Scales, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Our investigation into this heartless theft is ongoing and we're following a number of lines of enquiry.

"We're really pleased Norma has now received a replacement scooter thanks to this company's kind gesture.

"It's great how the local community and business community have come together and shown so much support towards Mrs King and we hope this replacement scooter will give her back her freedom and independence."
