Mansfield pensioners voice fears over council homes plan

The development forms part of a Mansfield District Council £14.8m scheme to provide eco-friendly homes at an affordable rent for older people and families on derelict land off Centenary Road.

It would see the expansion of Poppy Fields, with 48 homes for older people, 16 bungalows and 29 houses and apartments and is the ‘third phase’ of the council’s vision to provide affordable housing in the district.

But the plans have been with criticism from residents in the neighbourhood, who say properties for families are not suitable for the area,

Marlene Lewis, 81, said: “We don’t want this on our doorstep. There’s a lot against it, some don’t like to say. Residents want a calm, serene existence, not families with children playing outside.

“I’m a grandmother and great grandmother, I love children, but we are concerned that family homes mean children on bikes, making noise. It’s not what over 55s living is about.”

There are also concerns over an increase in traffic in the area, which is close to Chesterfield Road South.

Pat Rathbone, 79, said: “Old and young living together doesn’t work. It’ll increase noise with kids playing out and more traffic. You take your life in your hands going onto Chesterfield Road.”

But Coun Marion Bradshaw, portfolio holder for safer communities, housing and wellbeing, said the scheme is ‘designed to suit the needs of the community’.

“The mix of affordable housing is designed to suit the needs of the community and the properties will be owned and managed by the council,” she said.

"The layout aims to prevent car rat-runs and create a pleasant low-traffic environment. Nottinghamshire County Council as the highways authority are consulted on all planning applications.

“Although the Poppy Fields hub remains closed for the safety of residents, in line with government guidance, our ASSIST service staff remain on hand to provide residents with help and assistance.”
