Clipstone boss Dave Hoole, who had Beddoe as part of his Matlock Town academy side, was among those stunned by the news.

He said: “I have known Marcus since my Matlock days and, honestly, you could not have wished for a nicer bloke both on and off the pitch.

“On the pitch, on his day, he was an absolute world beater.

“His technique and his ability with a football were second to none.

“To match that off the pitch he was such a pleasant chap.

“He was a good friend of mine and he will be sadly missed at the club by everyone who knew him.”

A spokesman for Beddoe’s former club, Matlock Town, said: “Everybody that we have spoken to who knew Marcus from all different walks of life comment on what a kind, gentle-natured, talented and funny young man he was.

“His loss will be felt by all in the Derbyshire footballing community and his legacy will never be forgotten.”

Former team-mate Reece Davies added: “I played with Marcus when we were together at Spire Blues. [He] was a fantastic player and an even better guy. Don't think we ever stopped laughing when we played together. Thoughts with his family and friends.”

Meanwhile, local referee John Thornhill said: “Absolutely gutted to hear this news. I reffed Marcus for many years and he was such a genuine and decent lad and a pleasure to be on the same pitch. Thoughts with his family and friends.”
