The man behind OPA! (which is a Greek exclamation expressing surprise – something like ‘oops’ or ‘whoops’) originates from the shores of the Aegean in Thessaloniki and grew up on the types of food which he now serves in his takeaway.

“I have lived in Mansfield for years but when I was a student back in Greece my parents had a restaurant in the UK and I used to work for them in the holidays,” said Eddie.

After running a restaurant in Nottingham, he decided to bring his talents closer to home and open up in Mansfield at premises close to busy bars and pubs in Nottingham Road.

It’s the perfect food, and the perfect place, for picking up a fresh and tasty meal on the way home from work, enjoying after a few drinks in the local bars, or to order for delivery at home to share indoors or out with family and friends.

The venue opened in October 2021 and mainly does takeaway food, although it does have a small dining area for those wanting to eat there and then.

Bring a taste of Greece home

“This is authentic Greek food,” says Eddie. “Our Souvlaki (meat skewers) for example are handmade not bought in, we import our Gyros (kebab meat) directly from a really top supplier in Greece. The meat is so juicy – they taste amazing!”

Imported Greek herbs add to the tastes and aromas of the dishes on offer in this extensive menu.

Chicken Gyros, with homemade Tzatziki sauce; Chicken Skepatsi – a gyros with melted cheddar cheese, Romain lettuce, tomato, onions and tzatziki in two Greek pittas and a side of chips – Pork Gyros, Mixed Gyros and Chicken Souvlaki are all among the best-selling dishes.

But there is a huge range of kebabs and gyros to choose from, as well as burgers and things like Bougatsa Kima (Greek pastry with minced meat). You can get a mixed grill to share with friends that will feed up to five people – perfect for family dining!

Vegetarian and vegan

There are loads of vegetarian options too with Haloumi on the grill (Saganaki Cheese) Baked feta cheese in filo with honey and sesame, stuffed vine leaves (Dolmades); Fried Zucchini (Kolokithokeftedes), hummus, dips, yoghurt sauces, fried cheese balls and falafel. There’s lots of pastry dishes too like layered spinach and feta (spanakopita). Why not share with friends and family and order a range of dishes and a mixed vegetarian grill?
